My family and I go here every Friday night. Great food, great family owned restaurant. The fajitas and taquitos de pollo are amazing.

Not always excellent service but the food is the best Mexican food within the verde valley.

Eaten here a few times and always tasty and good service. The chicken fajitas are so yummy! Small dining area can get crowded at lunch (and only one bathroom, yikes!) but also has patio seating. Free chips, salsa and Mexican coleslaw =)

We ordered the chicken tostada, chicken sopito and spinach enchiladas. The taste and quality were excellent. The portions were generous, we took home 2 to go boxes. Service was friendly. This is an old building, very casual. Outside seating for cooler weather ( 102 when we were there). Ample parking, easy off and on the freeway. Only downside, no baby changing station in bathrooms. Recommend!!!

Holy huge portions! My fam and I stopped here on our way from Phoenix to Sedona based on the Yelp reviews, and I'm glad we did! We never would have stopped otherwise, as this spot isn't much to look at from the street, but Yelpers steered us in the right direction. We sat outside on the patio, and the experience was great. It's a super casual spot, with friendly staff and tasty food. I ordered the vegetable burrito, and was totally impressed by the variety of fresh veggies inside. Aside from the expected peppers and onions, the burrito also boasted broccoli and squash. I opted to forgo the rice, and they more than made up for the absence with an abundance of beans. Not only were there beans inside the burrito, but the plate was smothered with refried beans and cheese. It was entirely too much food for just me, but I ate what I could and left stuffed and satisfied. A small side of guac also accompanied my entree, and it, too, was tasty. Don't let the exterior fool you; this spot is definitely worth a stop if you're looking for large portions of yummy Mexican food.

After touring Montezuma Castle, we were looking for a lunch spot and found this one on Yelp. Reviews were right on, food was delicious. Home made taco shells, great

We arrived around 8:00 pm on our way back to Phoenix from a eleven-mile hike in Flagstaff. We had a pretty big appetite by then, and it happened to be our anniversary, so we were looking for something quick, good, substantial, but not so fancy we'd have to get showered and dressed up. Found El Patio on Yelp while on the road, and it seemed to fit the bill. If not for Yelp, we would have missed it totally, not just because the place is off I-17 a bit, but the lighting on the sign was out. We sat on the patio - noise from the road was not bad at all, but there were a few kids running around screaming. The patio floor had a grade to it, so I had to make sure to sit on the upward slope side of the table or the table would be closer to my chin. The atmosphere inside and out was like what I'd expect of a moderate restaurant in Mexico. Very unassuming, Mexican music playing. We were served chips & salsa right away. Along with the salsa came a pickled cabbage relish, which was quite tasty. The beer selection was pretty small, a selection of domestic and Mexican bottles. The menu selection was pretty extensive for a small place - for people who don't eat beef, there was lots to choose from. Prices were moderate - most inexpensive entree was the veggie burrito plate @$7.75, and most was around $14. The waitress seemed kind of confused when I asked which non-beef enchilada was the best, and she said she'd definitely order the ground beef. When I clarified we don't eat beef, she suggested the spinach - I accepted the advice. My husband ordered a combo with a chili relleno, a tamale, and an enchilada. He asked for chicken for the meats, or just cheese if the item does not have a meat filling. The spinach enchilada ($8.95?) was delicious, but a bit simple - large corn tortilla (or maybe two smaller ones, smothered with a sour cream flavored sauce. It had a very large side of black beans in a small pot, and spanish rice. A very large portion, but with my appetite, ate all but some of the beans (seemed like a whole can of beans!) My husband's three-item combo ($9.75?) was pretty huge, and he enjoyed everything but couldn't finish it all. The tamale appeared to have beef in it, even after asking for chicken or cheese for all the fillings. He was hungry enough he still ate it. The chicken filling in the enchilada was moist and delicious. He thought the relleno was awesome. For a hungry couple returning from a hike, wanting good, authentic food with a casual atmosphere, found a perfect spot that we will be sure to return to in the future.

I went to this restaurant last night while visiting my parents (who come to this establishment often). We arrived after 8pm (closing time); however, the waitress said we can eat on the patio or order to go since they had to clean/prep the floors for night cleaning. I ordered the fried tilapia fish with a Tecate. The chips and salsa were amazing, and the meal was excellent. This is by far the most authentic and fresh meal I've had in this area. It reminds me of a good spot down in the valley (Mariscos Sinaloa). The waitress was very attentive throughout the meal and I would definitely go back anytime I want a good mexican meal.

We were heading out of Sedona toward Phoenix for our flight home to the NYC area. We really wanted GREAT Mexican food as one of our last meals in Arizona. We found El Patio along our route, just off the highway and decided to stop and give it a try. It was a bit chilly, but we wanted to enjoy the view of the mountains so sat outside on the Patio. The menu was great and very authentic - not watered down for tourists like so much of what we found in Sedona. The service was great - the waitstaff was busy inside as well, but took good care of us even though for most of our meal we were the only patrons on the patio. My sister's food was delivered promptly, but I had to wait as they said they made a mistake with mine. Apparently the two waitresses (yes two!) who met us initially and took our order each heard different things, and the one who put the order through gave me a combination of chicken and veggie enchiladas. I asked for two veggies as I don't eat meat. They did get it right in the end, and the food was well worth the wait.

Holy smokes! This place rocks! My family and I were on our first vacation together and after landing in Phoenix needed to get some food along our journey to the Grand Canyon. We turned to Yelp! and once again it did not disappoint. When we drove up we were initially scared. The place outside is nothing to look at and is located right next door to a gas station. We were worried but said, hey...what the heck. And boy am I glad we did. The food is classic. The margaritas are excellent and the ambiance is true comfy Mexican. El Patio caters to the locals so you know its good. I had the cheese enchiladas and they were delicious. The guacamole is out of this world. We all enjoyed our lunch so much that for the next 5 days we craved going back...and didi! We ate dinner at El Patio the last night in town before heading back to Phoenix. Please go! This is a family run restaurant that puts their heart and soil into making good food!

This was a great spot to stop on the way to Sedona-homemade Mexican at a great price! Friendly service! Couldn't ask for more!

Don't judge a book by its cover! The food is FANTASTIC! A hidden gem right off I-17 and X293. A great Value as it offers plenty of food for a very reasonable price. Salsa is perfect, cabbage salsa is interesting but delicious. Chili Relleno is scrumptious (and I don't like just anyone's...) Margarita's look fantastic but have yet to try as the driver. Nice patio seating, very friendly/accomodating staff. We have been back and will continue to do so! :)

We visited this restaurant on our drive up to Sedona. We had chicken fajitas and they were very tasty!! The salsa and the condiments were wonderful. We highly recommend this place. It's very economical and delicious!! Go and try for yourself. :-)

What a surprise thanks to yelp. We would not have stopped here otherwise as it's nothing to look at and next to a gas station. The service was great - helpful and attentive, the server suggesting an alternative when I didn't seem sure if my selection. The cabbage pico de gallo was delicious - we had seconds. Highly recommend for casual dining with the locals between Phoenix and Sedona/Flagstaff or on a visit to Montezuma National Park.

This is decent mexican food (and I could see it being the best in the area) and the Patio has good service in, what seems like, a popular little place. We visited on a rainy Friday evening and the place was about 75% full. Still, service kept up with us and our meals were served promptly. I had the 7 Mares soup which was a pleasant surprise, full of seafood, and Jenny the carnitas burrito. The burrito was just meat, so beware if you are looking for other fillings, but it was good meat. The beans and rice were both decent. In all, it exceeded expectations for an off-the-highway joint near Rimrock, but I wouldn't make it my 'must-go' stop if visiting AZ from across the country.

  • Alison K.

Solid Mexican food with good service. I had the carnitas burrito which was huge, authentica and sinful aka fried pork. Hot table salsa and cabbage slaw a plus. Green chile was great too.

This was a great find, especially given it's off the beaten path. The restaurant is off the highway from Sedona to Phoenix and, if not for Yelp, we'd have never discovered it. The restaurant seems to be very popular with locals. We sat on the patio and some local people were a table or so away. We somehow mentioned that we were on vacation and travelling through. One of the local regulars offered to take our picture. The patio actually faces the highway. There's a short fence, but you do get a lot of highway noise in the background. She was careful to take our picture with the mountains in the background, since that makes for a much nicer photos. The patio is very pleasant, especially in nice whether. They have live plants, which is a good touch. This place was good food and good people. The food was good. The refried beans and rice were okay, but not exceptionally flavorful. They also did not taste bad. They used real sour cream on the enchilada. The green chili was pretty good, but didn't have a lot of kick. The meal was nicely garnished with a fresh orange slice. It was a very nice presentation. And, for thei truly important things. Chips and salsa are complementary and were very tasty. The margarita was very good. I have had far worse. It was very drinkable, so did not last long.

Wow! This place is amazing! Growing up in NE AZ I ate the best of the this style of food. This place is outstanding! I would drive here just to eat! I had a combo plate, taco and relleno. The relleno was out of this world! Taco was good. The rice lacked seasoning a little but mixed with the beans it was perfect! The hubby had a bean and cheese burrito and it was freakin awesome! The salsas were so good! The cabbage one was seriously unbelievable!

Great place! Rice and beans were delish! Prices were cheap, carne asada, tamale, and salsa were great! Service was wonderful! This is a cute little place that doesn't look like much on the outside and I almost passed it up but the reviews here were all too good to ignore and they were right!

Fantastic authentic Mexican restaurant! Waitstaff friendly and included our waitresses' daughter welcoming us and getting our drink order. Service was excellent! Prices are very reasonable. Salsa, chips, and a delicious cabbage slaw was delivered to our table right away. All of our food was fantastic, ranging from Chimichangas to Fajitas. There was lots of sharing between my family of 4 as we all ordered something different and equally enjoyed what the others ordered. Easily accessible off from I-17, take exit 293 and you will see it up on the hill next to a convenience store. Doesn't look like much from the outside but well worth it. They have a patio as well but it was midday and to hot to enjoy a meal when we visited.

Not only the best Mexican food in Verde Valley, best authentic mex in AZ seriously. The carnitas alone is worth the drive from Phoenix. You won't believe how fresh and tasty everything is- rice and beans included. If you're taking a trip to Prescott or Flag make this a must stop - going North on I-17 it's the Maguireville exit, you'll see it on the left as soon as you get off I-17. Going South it's the Cornville exit. I wish I could find a place in town half as good.

Yep. That typical Mexican hole in the wall. Great food, price and service. Been here many times and really enjoy sitting on the outdoor patio. Never been disappointed and neither will you.

If you find yourself hungry anywhere near this restaurant, definitely stop. The food is very good. And the kids' hamburger is even really good (a little salty in a good way). Great stop if you're driving to Sedona from Phoenix or if you're coming out of a visit to Montezuma Castle or Montezuma Well. Margaritas are quite tasty, too! Definitely coming back here next time I'm in the area.

Found this awesome, local restaurant right off I-17.. thanks to Yelp. The ambience is very South Western with many local families visiting for lunch. Food was flavorful and delicious.. The biggest plus of all - many veggie choices!

Although I didn't order an actual meal as we were just meeting a couple people here, I did (of course) chow down on some chips and salsa! There was two salsa's that came with the chips, a regular red salsa and a chunky salsa with cabbage in it. Both were YUM! Our friends had already finished eating when we got there, but he insisted that I try the beans. Which tasted delicious, like my friends tia would make - fresh and hand mashed. My dad ordered a bean burrito and black coffee. The coffee took forever to get to the table but was quickly forgiven because it was made fresh. The burrito must have been good because he didn't complain once about it, which is saying something. The cook actually brought it out shaking hands with them and joking around. The staff were very friendly and laughed with my dad because he insisted the waitress marry him. (Gotta love elders!) Even when a boy brought the coffee, he took it in stride when my dad demanded the young waitress come back. LOL The tables were turning over quickly. They even seated a group of about 20 quickly and got their drinks going. On Friday's they have a Mariachi singer, but alas it was Saturday. It will be somewhere I would go back, especially the location on top of the hill and you can see the lights of camp verde -very pretty!

As a fourth-generation Arizonan, I have eaten Mexican food all over the state of Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California, even in the south of England I can truthfully say that I have never had better Mexican food or service then I have at El Patio. For those who love good Mexican food they won't be disappointed in el patio.

Visiting Sedona Sky Academy and director referred me to this little place. I was blown away with the quantity and quality of this off the beaten path place. It was Friday afternoon at 3pm and the place was packed. Anyone traveling between Phoenix and Flagstaff should make note of this place.

Randomly ran into this right-off-the-highway restaurant after stopping to fill up on gas for the drive between Sedona and Pheonix. GF and I shared a Carnitas platter and it was really good. It came with REALLY tasty refried beans (had some spicy kick to it), rice, some pico de gallo in a cute little taco shell bowl and a HUGE mount of fried pork carnitas. There was also a slice of orange on top that went suprisingly well with the pork. The Carnitas had a good mix of large moist pieces as well as some that were more fried and crunchy, so there was a good mix for whatever type you prefer. We were given the option of corn or flour tortillas to go with it and we went with corn and they were brought out in one of those little containers you usually get alongside fajitas. It kept them nice and moist.. We shared the entree and it was more than enough for both of us. We also got some sopapillas to go and they were really good. Like fried bread with cinnamon and sugar on it and they gave us some honey packets as well to go with it. It was really good. The GF was a huge fan (no surprise there... sugar, sweets, oh my.) The staff was very nice and were smiles all around. If you're in the mood for Mexican food on your drive from Sedona to Pheonix, I recommend you stop on in.

This was a great local place to stop for dinner. We found it on Yelp - THANKS for the previous reviews. It's so handy to the Freeway. It was filled with locals on a weeknight. The service was quick and good and the food was great! I'd recommend this to all - in fact I have already recommended it to friends in the area.

We were referred to this place by some awesome couples we met at the Page Springs Winery. We were hungry on the way back to Phoenix and Mexican sounded good. Right by the freeway from Cornville. The food was great, the service was great, and the pricing was great. It was a good find so close to the I-17 and a good place to know about when traveling between Phoenix and Flag.

Very good fresh Mexican food. My husband judges all Mexican restaurants by their chili rellano and he gave it a thumbs up! Salsa was very tasty and the chips were served warm!

While taking a scenic drive on Easter Sunday, we stumbled across El Patio. We hadn't planned on stopping for dinner so early, but the smells emitting from this tiny restaurant were so enticing we had to stop. We were immediately greeted and seated on the patio by a very friendly hostess, who served us a bowl of fresh tortilla chips along with a bowl of pico de gallo and another full of spicy, flavorful salsa. I order a margarita. It was very strong and refreshing. There are tons of menu options to choose from. I decided on a the combo with tacos, a chili relleno, and rice and beans. The rice and beans were both tasty. The rice was fluffy and the beans were moist and creamy. The relleno was great, and was topped with a light red pepper sauce. The taco was good, yet average. My husband order the tamales. We both agreed they were the BEST restaurant tamale we had ever had!! The masa was tender. The beef was moist and flavorful. This tamale melted in my mouth. The red sauce on top didn't over power the tamale, but added to its perfect flavor. Our daughter order a cheeseburger. Considering that this is a small Mexican restaurant, with few American menu items, we didn't expect much. We were shocked when her cheeseburger arrived as a huge well seasoned beef patty with fresh cheddar on a toasted bun, accompanied by fresh toppings, and crispy steak fries Overall, this restaurants food is delicious, authentic, and very fresh . The service is great. The portions are huge. Though small, the place is very clean, and even offers a full service bar. It is more then an hours drive from my house, but well worth it. I cant wait to go back. Next time I will try the fajitas, which looked awesome, and I will order some of their amazing tamales to go.

We stopped on our way home from the canyon back to Phoenix. What an amazing surprise! By far the best, most authentic Mexican food I have had this side of the border! Everything was delicious from the salsa to the fajitas to the burritos to the enchiladas to the tacos. A most definite repeat EVERY time we take a visitor to the canyon.

Very unassuming restaurant on the side of I-17. We brought our kids in, 7, 5, and 18 months. Though they didn't have a kids menu, the staff was kind and helpful and accommodating. The food was fresh and authentic, and I really enjoyed the shredded beef enchiladas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
